    • Abstract:
Examines how Early Modern English poet Edmund Spenser uses Geoffrey Chaucer as both a model and as a sign of humility. Speculation on what Spenser thought he was doing when he set up for poet laureate; Ways in which Spenser mixes Chaucerian romance with his version of Calvinism and Vergilian imperialism in the first episode of 'The Faerie Queene'; Spenser's use of allusions to Chaucer in order to pretend to trivialize his work.
