    • Abstract:
This article offers a reading of Bernard Noël's controversial cycle of 44 'papoèmes', Bruits de langues (1980). It develops Bayard's (1989) account of their generative constraints of acrostics and numerology, adding a discussion of rhyme and metre. Patterns of alliteration and homophony are then shown to release ‘accidental’ phonetic connections from the ‘décharge’ of linguistic ‘oubli’. These build complex metafigural patterns linking writing with bodily functions, especially sexual behaviours, often through parody of canonical intertexts, notably by Nerval, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, and Mallarmé. In conclusion, a uniquely metapoetic embodiment of the Bruits held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France is described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
