    • Abstract:
The article presents information on poet Cesário Verde's literary works. Verde's early urban poems repeatedly feature the figure of a femme fatale, typically a Northern European "milady" at large in the streets of Lisbon, characterized by her socio-economic status and dazzling chic, devastating arrogance and a perverse libidinousness. Through a close examination of two urban poems, "Noitada" and "O Sentimento dum Ocidental," one finds the city and the femme fatale expressed in a common language, for like the narrator's perverse relationship with the fatal woman, his experience of the city is marked by coldness, solitude and alienation, entrapment and subjugation. Cesário's Lisbon is not merely populated by bodies, but inextricably fused with them to form an eroticized space.
