    • Abstract:
The article reports that the Muses are 'formal constants of the literary tradition, and every page in the history of European literature speaks of them.' But it is worth looking more closely at Chaucer's invocations of the nine sisters of Helicon and Parnassus, and his appeals to the three whom he calls by name- Polyhymnia, Clio, and Calliope- for the mythographers of the Middle Ages offered a great wealth of treatments and interpretations of the Muses, and it may be that an investigation of Chaucer's sources of information on this topic will shed light on his use of the Muses in his own works.
