    • Abstract:
The article focuses on the emergence of the poet himself as an important aspect in the assertion of the self in Geoffrey Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." It notes Walter Ong's famous article "The Writer's Audience is Always Fiction," which he describes the poetic "I" as a rhetorical device adopted when the medieval audience began shifting from hearing to reading. It claims that the appearance of poetic "I" in medieval literature cannot be automatically taken as evidence of discovery of the individual.
