    • Abstract:
The typological change of languages from syntheticity towards analyticity has traditionally been described almost exclusively for the inflectional domain, whereas the developments in derivation are either entirely ignored or mentioned only in passing. The present article seeks to fill this gap, using English as an example and focusing on three major changes (one quantitative and two qualitative in nature) that occurred in the English lexicon. This test procedure can be used as a template for the investigation of other languages as well. The influence from French, which turned English into a typologically mixed language in several respects, will be included in the discussion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
