The article discusses the so-called New Critics' concern for the rhetorical structure of the literary text. Reasons why the belief in the anti-historical and anti-biographical bias of the New Criticism had fully developed in the 1940s are examined, and traditional scholars' belief that New Criticism was fixated on close reading through analyses of poems is commented on.
